THE PRINCESS BRIDE - (Sept. 25, 1987 (US) /March 28, 1988 (UK))
Director: Rob Reiner (Spinal Tap 1984, Stand By Me 1986, Misery 1990)
Starring: Fred Savage (The Grandson), Perter Falk (The Grand Father), Cary Elwes (Westley), Robin Wright (Buttercup), Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya), Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck), Wallace Shawn (Vizzini), André the Giant (Fezzik), and Christopher Guest (Count Rugen).
This film has gained an impressive cult following thanks to its home video release and the relentless enthusiasm of its fans. But the initial marketing for the film, adapted by William Goldman from his 1973 novel, was confusing (especially the trailer) and resulted in box office failure.
We look at the original marketing efforts and compare those to the regular events, cast reunions, and “live” performances which have kept The Princess Bride amongst the most successful movies of all times.
