It is the story of Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) a wealthy investment banker who is given a mysterious gift on his 48th birthday by his wayward brother Conrad (Sean Penn) —participation in a game that "makes your life Fun”. Quickly his controlled life is turned upside down and he becomes unable to distinguish between the game and reality. Hints of a large conspiracy at play.

The first trailer for the film only featured voices over a movie of a puppet being manipulated by strings. Intriguing.
